My girlfriend and i are getting a bigger TV for our new place, and are running on a budget.

Went down to costco today, and the two TV's that caught my attention were a 42", 1080P LCD w/ 120hz refresh rate, and a 50" Panasonic 720P TV with what im assuming is a 60hz refresh rate. Both are the same price.

We have a good sized living room, so obviously we would like the bigger TV, but am i gonna see a big difference in quality between the two? We have HDTV, and will be getting a blu ray player (we watch a lot of movies)

All opinions welcome. I'de like to keep it simple and not have to order a TV and rather just buy one at a store, and im running on about an $800 budget.

Have you looked at them in the stores. I think the 720 and 1080 are how many pixels wide the picture is. So maybe that will help. At a distance it might not be quite as noticeable and would only look better if you have HD, IMO.

I have a 23" 720p television hooked up to my desktop/xbox360, and compared it to my girlfriends vizio 32" 1080p TV, and the vizio dominated my little 23" samsung, but i also have to consider that the size is WAY bigger in comparison

I would go with 42" and 120hz

To me I would sacrifice just 8 inches just to have great quality picture with 120hz and 1080p.. 120hz is an awesome feature and possibly my favorite feature on my Sony 46" Z series.. It never failed to amaze me.

But some might say the different way, but to me 42" is big enough and you should want that kind of quality over extra 8 inches of screen

get the 42"...in the long run it's a better value seeing how you going with a blu-ray player. With HD cable/satellite you can't really see a big difference between a 720 or 1080 tv.

Consider this as well, with the 42" you'll see almost everything that's going on on-screen..with the 55" your eyes are gonna be all over the place (unless your like 15-20ft away)

Is the 50" Panasonic also LCD TV? Not too many source will give you true 1080p resoultion. But when it does give you true 1080, you will definitely see a noticeable difference between 1080 and 720.

I don't get why people buy huge tvs, and then put them 25 feet away.
Because they are rich?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Actually I think because big screen TVs are so cheap nowadays, you can basically build a small private theater in your own house.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

i bet the Panasonic refresh rate is higher than 60hz, my guess is that it is a plasma with at least 1mil:1 contrast ratio and is probably a decent set for the money.guessing around 900 bucks. Either way you'll be happy.
