4 ga 1000rms?

Here we go again with McIntosh.

I saw the title, then saw you posted, and knew you'd be once again trying to stir up trouble...as usual.

There are a ton of ampacity charts that you can find, and the ratings are all over the place, for the most part. I've found some that say 4 gauge is only good for 100 amps, and another that says it's good for 160 amps. What McIntosh refuses to realize is that it's install/situation dependent. For car audio, 4 gauge is fine for 140-150 amps worth of fusing.

Now go troll somewhere else you lonely soul.

Let me try to simplify it for you: LENGTH HAS NO EFFECT ON AMPACITY. Get it?

I wasn't referring to length. I was referring to the abuse the wire is put through. Listening to music and barely reaching an actual 150 amps worth of current draw is far from having a solid 150 amp draw being put on the wire. We're not saying that 4 gauge can handle a continuous 150 amps for an infinite amount of time...we know it can't.

And if wire length doesn't matter, then why do I find multiple charts with different suggested wire size depending on the amperage being used and the length of wire? I'm also not saying that the wire itself can't handle the current draw, but that you won't be able to draw the same amount of current through the wire due to resistance within the wire itself. I obviously can hook up the same 1kw amp using a 5ft piece of 4gauge as well as using a 50ft piece of 4gauge...the amount of useable power being converted by the amps will be quite different though.
