3rd octave equalizer? What are they? What headunits have these?

Im looking for a new headunit to run active for a set of horns and ologys mids and need to run an active setup. The cd2 comp horns require 3rd octave equalization, what headunits have this?

would a pioneer p860mp work?

octaves from 20hz to 20,000hz divided in 1\3'rds.

a "1\3 octave equalizer" is a 31 band graphic equalizer.

Yup. And I don't know of any headunits that have a full 1/3 octave EQ in them.

Some of them have parametric EQ's that allow you to adjust the center frequency in "1/3 octave" incriments...but that's different than a full 1/3 octave (31 band) graphic EQ.

yes, that new ural deck claims to have stereo 1\3 octave EQ. now how well it is built, and how the user friendly the interface is we wont know until we read a review.

I'll hold off on any opinion/recommendation of the Ural deck until it actually hits the market over here.

i am too. it *has* hit the market, its for sale right now, and they supposedly have units on hand waiting for shipping. but until i see some user reviews - im not going to recommend it to anyone.

Without massive EQ work, horns soound awful, terrible, like poo.

Anyone know what city the Ural is made in? I might be able to get ahold of one since i have family in the region. Of course I won't be able to do anything with it untill I get back from Iraq...

IMO, there are many more important things involved in horn installs. Namely, x-over points, phase, and gain. If you look at IDtech's rules for tuning the last step is equalization. I also remember hearing on ID's forum that practically every member of the Team ID has run horns without any equalization and done quite well in IASCA. Of course the CD-2s do need a little more eq than the CD1 pros...

Unless ID has made major changes to their horns (which is entirely possible) the response curve on them is really ragged. The response curve is usually described as a "haystack". They are not typically used because they sound "natural" they are used because of their wider than normal frequency response range and their dynamic range.

With correct gain and crossover setting you can getthem to soud good, obviously, but to get the most out of them for true fidelity you really need an EQ.
