30-30 vs 308 vs 30-06 vs 270

300 yards is quite a distance for hunting... i would go with a gun capable of shooting distance... I also use a 7mm and thats the exact reason why... It can be a bit over kill but i can take any game in the states and most other game with it without having a problem. I have never hunted anywhere near where you are... anywhere out of ca to be exact... i personally dont know what its like out there so you should go scout the hunting zones and decide after you have a better idea of what the terain looks like...

well the 308 bigger is still better the only thing the 7mm has over it is a heavyer bullet the 7mm only as vel.2500 and ft.lbs of 1388 all it is , is an bigger necked up 223

If you are going to be shooting 300 yards, all except the 30-30 will work fine for you. They are all very close in ballistics - you or the deer won't be able to tell the difference.

What 7mm are you talking about? There is more than one cartridge that uses a 7mm bullet.

Ok..

Scratch the 30-30.

The .308, .270, and 30-06 are all very versatile calibers. Personally, I would choose a 30-06. It is suitable for any North American big game besdies a Grizzly. Bullet weights come in sizes from 120 grains for smaller game to 220 grains for the larger game. I personally used a 30-06 with 180 grain Silvertips from the time I was 10 till I turned 17. Great, flat-shooting caliber with plenty of knockdown. Many great hunters and gun experts name it the best hunting caliber of all time.

The .308 and .270 are also great calibers. I have seen a fair share of deer lost with a .270 though. This is mainly due to shot placement, but the extra WHOOMP the .308 and 06 provide can make up for less than perfect shot placement. When a buck comes through chasing a doe, the perfect double lung shot or shoudler shot isn't very easy. Too often, bucks chasing does get shot in less than ideal places i.e. the guts. The extra power the 06 provides helps tremendously in these circumstances.

But any of the three mentioned calibers will do just plain fine for deer hunting. A lot of us hunters are dead set in their favorite calibers, and the 30-06 is definitely one of mine. Just get you a decent bolt action rifle in 30-06, find you some 165 grain nosler partition bullets, sight it in about 2" high at 100 yards, and you are good to go out to 300 yards. At the 300 yards mark you will want to aim near the top of the deers back.

I personally switched from a Remington 7400 carbine 30-06 to a Tikka T3 Lite .300WSM due to the opportunities I have for long shots (400yards). If it wasn't for the potential of 300+ yard shots, I'd still be using my trust 7400..

And I would also like to commend you on your choice of an 835 for turkey. I purchased an 835 two years ago and have used it for 2 seasons on turkey. I outfitted it with a red dot scope matching the camo pattern of the gun. Using a Star-Dot choke tube and 3" Hevi 13 #6s, I am getting a devastating pattern at longer distances. I have cleanly harvested a gobbler at 60 yards with this setup. At 40 yards, there over 250 shot in a 10x11 piece of paper. Excellent turkey gun!

If your going to stick to dear and not got for bear or moose or something, the .270 is perfect. If you think you might go after something a little bigger later on, the .300 win mag is a nice frickin gone that shoots far and fast.
