The difference is the volume that they are recorded. 0db is the loudest that can be recorded, using this tone will insure that you don't damage your equipment, because you'll never play anything louder than this. The disadvantage is that most music is recorded lower than 0db, so setting your gains to this may not give you the volume you are looking for. Using -3,-6, and -10db recordings will give you better output, but if you are listening to music that is recorded louder than those numbers at the volume you set your gains to, you could damage something. -3db recordings should be pretty safe.

Thanks. I installed my sub and amp, expecting it to be a little lounder than it actually was. Could barely tell there was a sub ub the back even at 3/4 volume. At that volume the highs were giving me a headache.

*Edit* I just though that a type r with 500w would produce some nice output. I was very disappointed.
