3/4" birch on sale at home depot

It's too bad you guys don't understand that's regular pine plywood with a thin layer of birch on one side. It's mostly pine, not birch. It's not good for building boxes. It's density is way too low. Look for Marine grade Birch Ply at a real lumber yard that supplies boat builders. It's usually closer to $65 a sheet.

MDF is far superiour to that crap you're buying at home depot.

if it is the cabinet grade birch that is normally 60 a sheet it is the correct birch, they sell 2 kinds the pine ply birch is the wrong stuff.
Home depot does not sell real marine grade ply. That stuff is shit.

Cabinet grade just means it's void free. It's 90 % pine. For a home kitchen "cabinet" it doesn't matter if the ply is made of pine as long as it's void free and has a nice layer of birch one one side it looks and works fine in the kitchen. Same with the "maple ply". The cabinet maker and home owner can't tell the difference. A sub box on the other hand can tell the difference. Pine is not dense enough for sub boxes and will not raise the box resonace above the crossover threashold. Your box will resonate. MDF is very dense and it's resonace point is well above the crossover point.

MDF is a much better product for sub boxes.
