2ch or 4ch?

Hi all,

I'm running type r components in the front of a pair of type s 6x9's in the back with a 300w/4ch pg amp, but i'm not getting the sound quality that I used to get with a small 2ch zapco amp powering the fronts. Do I need a more powerful 4ch amp or would it be better to just get another 2ch and run the rears from the hu?

You're going to have to be more descriptive with the problem.

What exactly is your present system lacking?

What was "better" with your last system, and what did it consist of equipment wise?

What all are you presently using (i.e. what size speakers are you using, what model # is the amplifier, what headunit), how is everything currently set (crossovers, gain, headunit funtions), and how is everything installed (where are the speakers located, used any sound deadening, etc) ?

The present system isn't able to hit the higher frequencies. It doesn't seem to have the same range as the past system. The component speakers are Alpine SPR-176a and I used to be running them with a zapco 150x2 amp (before my car was broken into). Now I'm running them with a pg qx300.4 (for now until I figure out what I should get). I turned the hpf/lpf on it off and the front input sensitivity to max. The hu is an alpine cda9835. I have the present on it set to hip hop/r&b.

Well, for one..you are now using approximately 1/3 the power. That right there is going to cause some major differences.

You should be using the highpass filter.

The gain should not be cranked to the max.

How/where are the speakers installed ?

this amp is kind of wierd, there aren't any gain controls or frequency controls so i don't even know what to adjust.. I'm currently looking into an alpine mrv-f540/mrv-f340 or the two channel mrv-t320.. but i'm not really set on anything just yet

okay, i'll turn the filters on. and the sensitivity shouldn't be at the max?
I think it has something to do with distortion being introduced at max gain.

It's the same way for your HU. You should never set it at the highest volume level for the same reason.
