2003 Grand Marquis, Let's Discuss Audio Installation

I just won a 2003 MGM as a door prize down at the local VFW.

I am debating on whether to go down the car audio route again or leave the stock system in -- it's not that freaking bad.

Anyway, rather than do actual research myself, I thought I would sit back and receive the benefit of those who have done installs on this or other models that are basically the same.

My biggest question is WTF have you done with the front speakers? I think Crutchfield lists them as 5 x 8's and the factory grill is oddly located and shaped.

Discussion of anything else you have learned working with this vehicle is appreciated.

I have an 04 Crown Victoria, more or less, the same car. Up front, as well as in the rear, the car uses 5x7 speakers like alot of Ford cars.

Ive used a fair share of various 5x7s and 6.5s with adapters and had no issues. The grill is odd shaped, but I still get plenty of output from whatever speaker is behind it in the doors.

Currently, im running a PG RSD 6.5 midrange on a cheap 5x7/6x8 to 6.5 adapter and it sounds fine. Could use some deadening in my doors, but otherwise sounds good.

Thanks, any idea on how much depth there is for the front speakers?

Honestly cant remember. I could take my door panel off to measure it, but that would be a major hassle. Crutchfield should have the depth on their site I believe.

The front 5x7s in the doors are mounted on a plastic baffle from the factory that screws into the door. You can remove this baffle, make you own out of 1/2" MDF and use a nice 6.5. That would also give you more depth to play with if you had a deep midrange.

Are you referring to the sail panels? Then yes they are completly flat and very easy to remove. Ive installed several sets of tweeters on mine.

Im not sure of any model, even the high end ones that have front comps as a option.

fiberglass the sails and doors, problem solved
That's always a possible solution. But I am interested in keeping this project as small as possible.

Gotcha.

So, you had no problems with the RSD's? That would be a good sign, IIRC those things are almost 3" deep.
