2 Weeks with my Obsidian 15 D4 on ASPM-1500

So this tuesday will mark 2 weeks that I've had with my system.

If you don't know this was my first system ever, and all the parts save the wiring was recommended by this forum

Obsidian Audio 15 D4

Audiopipe ASPM-1500

3.4cu ft box tuned at 32hz

Rockford Fosgate 4 gauge Wiring Kit

I waited until I was familiar with my system.

I love it. I hate it. I love my entire system. I love the sub, I love the amp, I love the wiring, I love the box. I was really skeptical that a single 15 could provide me with the bump that I was looking for as a lot of you know. I probably annoyed a lot of you in the process. But I took your guy's word and I went for it. And I love it. The sub hits the lows that I didn't even know existed on my tracks! And I love them because they are the ones that cause the least rattle in my car. I have noticed that on full tilt, I do dim slightly, but not noticeably. Gains set to around 60% of max, so I'm probably pushing around 600ish watts to it at 2 ohms. Its the high bass notes that **** me off greatly. I am missing a huge portion of my mids, but I think thats because I haven't changed the low pass filter on it to 180hz yet. I am extremely happy with the setup I have.

The part I hate is the rattle. From the high bass notes. Thats all I hate.

The guy that did the installation for my sub (who was actually the same age as me) did an unbelivabally clean install. He installed the amp on the back of my seats, wired it through the top cover, so you don't see any wires, and wired the sub directly, no terminal cups, just speaker wire going directly to the leads. Once I dynomat my trunk and my rear deck, I'm going to have the sub facing the rear of the car so I can gain moar dB's with the rear seats down.

So thanks guys. Thanks for helping me stray from my previous setup with $50 kenwood subs.

I've learned a lot in the time I was here. But now since I have everything, I don't need to return back to this forum.

I wanna Obsidian 18 D4 though........................................just for a tad increase in bump hehehehe :p

Glad to hear your first system turned out good. I only wish my first setup was as nice as yours but then again there were no forums for car audio when I started doing this. First setup was a pair of jensen grip series 12's ( the ones with the white hand print on the cone) powered by a radio shack 50 watt amp running off of a factory gm tape deck. I thought I upgraded majorly when I stepped up to the kraco 140 watt amp I had LOL. That thing ran so hot. This was in 1996. When you are ready to upgrade bro I will take that obsidian off of your hands //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Mine rattles on the highs too. And facing it into the trunk will make u lose dbs. (Normally) it is possible to gain dbs it all depends on the vehical but in my experiences it doesn't gain dbs.

Through a mass majority of testing, it's been proven that facing towards the trunk lid not only sounds louder, but meters better as well. Of course, that's only vehicle specific, but most others will agree that facing the trunk lid will sound louder too.

Anyways, @EpicMango I am so glad to hear you took a leap of faith with the members here and it paid off. As for a few of your concerns, deadener will help on a lot of that. Though I wouldn't suggest Dynamat, I'd look into AudioTechnix, SecondSkin, or SoundDeadenerShowdown. Deadener will help improve the mid-bass response in your doors, and help cut out a lot of rattles in your car. It was one of the best investments I made into my system, it's a night and day difference. As for your low-pass filter, that almost always shouldn't be set any higher than 80-100hz. And for even better mid-bass response, look around for a good set of component speakers, with a small amplifier to drive them. That should cover the 70-150hz bass range much better that you say you're lacking.
As for your gains, I hope you went ahead and set them with a DMM, rather than just guessing at 60% = 600w, cus that's entirely dependent on your HU. Assuming your HU has 4v pre-outs, you're likely sending a very very very clipped 1500w signal to that sub.

obviously u havent learned enough u stupid noob.....setting ur low pass filter to 180hz? ........gains set to 60%......hahahaha u will be back in a month or 2 asking why ur shiit stopped working.......either way the less retards here the better

I didn't set my gains or my LPF.

Or anything on my amp

The guy that installed it did

He first asked me to turn my bass stuff to 0

Then he told me to turn the decks volume to the highest volume that I'd be reaching

He did this like 4-5 times to set my gain.

I'll go take a picture of the gain settings to show you exactly where it is at.

I haven't touched **** on it!

Here's the settings on the amp. Once again none of them were set by me, but the dude that installed mah system

And here's the install for the system, just for shows //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

You should be fine with the gain as long as you don't smell anything...if you start smelling the coil set your gain knob to be 50%. Also, bring your low pass filter down to at least 80 - 100hz. A lowpass that is set too high can actually kill your subwoofer (higher frequencies = sub moves less = less cooling to the coil)

Done or tested many loud trunks, have you? Because that's a load of crap.

At 2 ohms, that gain setting is probably perfectly fine. Especially since he's probably only got 2v outs (or less).
