2 premiers vs 1 L7?

I have 2-10 premier ts-w1500-spl subs. They are in a tube ported box. They sound decent with my orion 1200d in my firebird. My buddy has a bmw with the stock deck, 1-10 L7 and an 800 watt pioneer amp and his is WAYYY louder than mine. Is his sub really that much better than mine? Is my box built incorrectly? It has about 1.2 cubes per chamber not including sub or port sizes. His box is slot ported, also it is quite a bit bigger than mine. Should I build a new box or are his subs just that much better than mine? Thanks.
