Well how much are you looking to spend? Also, the older Mags can take a hell of a lot of power, and you can give them as much as you want, up to around 1500 or more each. However, if you port them, they will still get loud with between 500 - 750 a piece. What amp is your buddy going to sell you? Because if it is of decent build quality and reputation, I would suggest purchasing it, and if the combination is not loud enough selling it here and getting something else.
Also, something you may not have considered - Mags only come in Dual 2. Therefore, a pair will wire to 8 ohm, 2 ohm, or 0.5 ohm. Therefore, you're going to need a strong amp that won't go into protect at 0.5 ohm, or an amp that will give the desired power when wired up to 2 ohm.

if your not competing and you don't want to upgrade your altenator i would get a kicker zx1500.1. I have one pushing two 15 Mags in a sealed box and its gets very loud.

Yea im definitely not gonna run them at .5 ohm. Im not gonna be competing either and I dont wanna upgrade my alternator. Is 1500 w. not too much for your alternator? How many volts is it?

it depends on what alt you have to better determine if 1500watts is too much or not. And what do you mean by how many volts?

I meant amps my bad. Well I was told 70 amps is about 100 watts. Or is there much more to the story.

you mean for every 70amps you will be able to produce 1000watts? If that's the case, then it's probably not true. It's a lot more involved than that. Unfortunately I don't have the info about that, so i can't help you. Best to search around.
Btw, what alt do you have? I was running 1500watts with a 75stock alt before. It was dimming a bit, but nothing major

Yea I figured there would be more to it. Mine is 90 amps. I think I will be fine. Yea Im just lookin for the cheapest, but quality, amp I can find that is at least 1500 watts. I would buy a used one from someone off this site but I cant trust someone I dont know.
I have a 80 amp alt and a second battery in the trunk and get no dimming from my zx1500.1, they're pretty efficient and i also have a amp putting out 300+ rms as well as the zx1500.1.

its really up to you. Like i said i have two 15in Mag's sealed off my zx1500.1 and i don't need it any louder. So its a personal thing, plus the more power you go, the more electrical upgrades too
