2 12"s or 1 15"

lmfao 2 12's will have more cone area then 1 15 but will require more room

One 8" = 50.27

One 10" = 78.54

One 12" = 113.1

One 15" = 176.71

One 18" = 254.47

Two 8" = 100.53

Two 10" = 157.08

Two 12" = 226.19

Two 15" = 353.43

Two 18" = 508.94

what amp what ohm load and what subs are u thinking???

Since you already started this thread, one that has been started 45,670,987,899,234 times, I'm going to thread jack and ask a question. Is there a dropoff point in terms of output when using 2 12's as opposed to 1 15. what I mean is, even though 2 12's have more cone area than 1 15, about 22%more, is it that much louder? I mean 22% louder?

An easier way to understand is this...

Assuming everything is the same. Sub, Box, power, etc. Theoretically

1 15 does 140db

but 2 12's don't do 170.8

So what are the benefits of 2 12's as opposed to 1 15? Is there are way to figure out if it is worth the extra subwoofer?

Thanks!

And I'm not sorry I jacked your thread. I did it on purpose!

id like to know this also.

Doubling the cone area gains 3db automatically assuming everything else is the same, so a 22% increase in cone area would equal less than 1db. I personally think with 2 12s vs 1 15, it is mostly preference and what you can fit/power/afford. I could be totally wrong here though.

micah_jones pretty much laid out the displacement difference to output. Another factor to consider is two 12's have twice as much motor to dissipate heat and minimize thermal compression. And with 4kw going to a single 15, TC would likely be an issue. Two 12's will cost more than one 15 though, when comparing like-model speakers. Your trunk size/shape could also play a role in which option would be the best choice.

yup. The biggest consideration here for me is the power. You get more cone are with 2 12's and very few coils and suspensions will even take 4k without damaging it or shortening the equipment life. Even if they do, your way past the point of diminishing returns, just because you add power doesn't make it louder. 12's generally fit into trunks easier too. Other than being nearly 2x the price in alot of cases, the 12's are a better choice, just have to decide if you can afford it. But, if you can afford a 4k amp and the elecrical to handle it that shouldn't be an issue.

2 12's = more money, but can distribute the heat better, will be louder in the right box and possbly fit in your trunk better considering a 15 is 3" taller, which may restrict the box options you want to work with. Plus 12's are the best all around size in my opinion...gl
