My cousin who I haven't seen in years came by the other night for my birthday, it turns out hes into car audio to, hes running 3 IDMAX 12's in a sealed box, I don't know what was was powering the, some kind of PG titanium. Th sound quality and acuracy was awsome, just amazing, it got loud but I expected them to get alot louder, I'm sure it has somethign to do with the amount of power pushing em, again don't know how much but I was real impressed with those.

Woulda been hella loud if he would have ported them.

I asked him why he didn't go ported, he said he wanted to keep some trunk space because he has 2 kids, its a nice setup though, nothing to special but there are headrest monitors in back, one with a PS2 the other with Xbox and headphones only for audio to keep just the kids entertained

It is common for people to think sealed is the way to go for SQ, but I find the right ported box to be better all around. Great advantage in SPL and SQ over sealed. The only down side is the size of the box. Ported must be bigger...usually.

From a pure accuracy standpoint the sealed box will be better at the cost of SPL than a properly tuned ported enclosure. Most people won't hear the difference and prefer the extra output of the ported box. A lot also depends on the sub. Some subs don't react well to a sealed box (the old JL 10W5 comes to mind) and some sound like garbage in a ported box (eD O series is a good example). Assuming that the sub will work well in either type of enclosure there will be a slight loss in transient response and detail in the ported box because of the properties of the port. That 3dB of extra output isn't free.

Those IDMAXs were seeing maybe 350 watts each assuming he was running the biggest Ti amp that PG made, the 1200.1. They have a lot more potential given more power.

yea man I went sealed thinking it would sound better and than heard my friends ported enclousure and saw a big difference

mainly the fact that the sound was soo much smoother, although when he had his gains up it sounded like shiat

I went from 1.8 cubic sealed to 2.5 cubes tuned to 28hz ported on the IDMAX. Transient response wasn't lost, at least to my ears, and only thing i sacrifice for the 3db gain around 30hz was trunk space //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
