okay i have a 1994 ford thunderbird and i want a diff. muffler...... for the past year i have been running a flowmaster 40 series delta flow and its no louder than stock is and that makes me mad becuase i payed 120 bucks for them to put it on. so i have been looking around and i found one of these bad boys http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33636&item=7984700235&rd=1 . i know this is made for a 4 banger car which i love but mine is a v6. so would it be a good idea to put one of these on it. thanxs alot and will it sound like a mature bumble bee than an adult one. thanxs alot

if you're lookin for loud gut that thing.. take a crowbar to it and pull its insides out....it should work for your 6 cylinder as long as the inlet diameter is not smaller than ur piping now.. if it is it will restrict the airflow

lets hope becasue my buddy has that same muffler and it sounds like crap. fit for a civic though.

dont put that on a t-bird. try gutting your cat and removing restrictors b4 anything. or, leave your cat and restrictors and cut off the muffler and run a straight pipe back.

I wouldn't waste the cash on those "mufflers."

From what you describe and what you apparently are looking for as an end result, you are far better going with either or both of these courses instead:

1. Remove the existing Flowmaster Mufflers and replace it with straight pipe.

Since the mufflers on MN12 Chasis cars basically sit right before the exhaust tip itself, they are the last thing in line to quiet down the car. Many people with these cars with either the 3.8 or the 4.6 engines omit their mufflers as a first measure to better sound and a slight performance increase. Typically both sound pretty decent with just a low mild rumble. No drone, and not loud enough to attract police attention; but still lound enough to satisfy most people.

2. Keep the Flowmasters and remove the resonator just after the converters. Replace it with straight pipe. Also a popular mod for the stock MN12 exhaust.

The resonator on these cars was designed to decrease exhaust sound. It should itself allow your Flowmasters to come alive a little more.

Many T-Bird owners even do both right away, which obviously will result in an even louder exhaust note. I personally don't feel it's necessary, as either mod on it's own will result in a noticeable difference.

Beyond that, I'd look into a complete performance exhaust if the above does not satisfy.

Keep in mind though, that due to the nature of the underbody and exhaust routing of the MN12 Chasis, an aftermarket exhaust is going to be a little on the pricey side and some modifications the the steering, mounts, and hangers, will be necessary.

Give either of the first two options a shot and see what you think. Either way, they will be initially less expensive and you'll gain further perspective on how exhausts work.

okay where is the cat or cats at becuase right now my flowmaster is right underneath of the seats. and there is this little box thing that runs right out of that that splits into 2 pipes and then up a bit further there is 2 little round things thanxs alot and where do i go to get these cut off at. my local muffler shop wont do it becuase its illegal thanxs

Are you sure your T-Bird is a 94?

The OEM MN12 Chasis does not have provisions or clearance for any muffler right under the seats. The 83-88 Fox Chasis T-Birds did however.......

IE: The under side of a standard MN12 Chasis T-Bird. (This one has the aftermarket exhaust allready, but it gives you an idea of how tight things are under the car.)

This would be what a standard OEM T-Bird Exhaust would look like:

Generally the converters are the first things in line right down from the exhaust manifolds. They are usually oval in shape. The resonator typically comes next and resembles a small muffler.

It is illegal for any shop nation wide to remove or gut a catalytic converter. If that is the route you wish to go, you will likely have to do it yourself. Plus, you will also have other issues (Sensors, MIL, etc) to address in doing so.

Any decent shop can remove the mufflers without any legal issue.

i dont have a 4.6 i have a 3.8 litter and it only has 1 exhaust pipe. when i had my flowmaster put on they said they could put it right after the resonater to make it louder. the resator is a triangle thing where 2 pipes run into 1 right? they cut off one of the resanators. but not the big one i think.......Personally i think im going to cut off the resanoter and both cats with a sawzall and gut all of them and then have one of my old friends who works at a welding shop weld them back on to me. also i talked to one of my friends and he said he knows a muffler shop that will do that for the perfect price!!!! lol but i dont think i want to spend very much money. and yes i know its a 94. its the same color as urs zane..which hopely be painted black when i get the front end fixed. also zane i was thinking about puttin on eibach springs (the loweing one's) do u think this will make it look beter. thanxs alot guys. and another thing if is will gutting the resantor be the same as gutting the cats...buy driving a rod threw them. and will it make my flowmaster sound like a bumble bee. that is what the muffler shop who put it on said it would sound like if i cut off my cat. and also in the county i live and i get inspecter there is no more emissions so i can run it like this they just have to be able to see that is has the cats. so knocking them out would make more since than just cutting them off and running a straight pipe. like i said thanxs alot guys.

I am aware you have the V6. The point I was getting at is that the layout of the exhuast for the V6 is virtually the same as it is on the V8. Just an additional tail pipe at the rear axle and a slightly larger pipe diameter is about it. The underbody of the MN12 Chasis is the same regardless of engine.

Here's the OEM (Non- SC) Exhaust for your car. I have labeled the main components to give you a little better idea.

From you previous description, it sounds as if they did not replace the muffler at all; but instead, just swapped out the resonator for your flowmaster muffler.

In which case, it's easy to see why you car would be so quiet.

Personally i think im going to cut off the resanoter and both cats with a sawzall and gut all of them and then have one of my old friends who works at a welding shop weld them back on to me. also i talked to one of my friends and he said he knows a muffler shop that will do that for the perfect price!!!! lol but i dont think i want to spend very much money.
If you are not looking to spend much money then cutting the converters is NOT the way to go. You would still have to custom bend and weld in new straight pipe, as well as purchase MIL Eliminator's to install on the Heated O2 Sensors that are installed right behind the Converters. The MIL Eliminators typically go for just under $100 a pair for these cars, and are completely necessary if removing the converters, or the car will trip it's MIL and eventually slip into "Limp Home Mode." I can elaborate on that further if needed, but for now, lets just say "Limp Home Mode" is a bad thing.

Furthermore, by removing the converters and just running straight pipe back will dramatically reduce the backpressure in the exhuast to the point where your low end torque will suffer. Too little backpressure is just as bad as too much.

Not to mention that you will also likely have a very annoying exhuast drone. That much is self explanatory.

INSTEAD, I'd suggest removing the OEM Muffler at the rear of the car, and replace it with strait pipe. It's much easier to get at and will cost far less to have pipe custom bent and welded in that area.

It should also give your car a bit more of the rumble that you are looking for.

OR

You could simply remove your Flowmaster all together and replace it with straight pipe. It will provide nearly the same end result, however, it will likely be a little quieter than the previous option; due to the OEM Muffler being the last thing in line of the exhaust.

and yes i know its a 94. its the same color as urs zane..which hopely be painted black when i get the front end fixed. also zane i was thinking about puttin on eibach springs (the loweing one's) do u think this will make it look beter.

Dropping your bird will certainly make it look better!!!

Not only that, but it will also decrease your wind resistance at speed, and increase your handling. Both are good and result from a lower center of gravity.

Mind how much you drop it though. Typically 1-2 inches is allright on most cars before you run into alignment issues.

thanxs alot guys. and another thing if is will gutting the resantor be the same as gutting the cats...buy driving a rod threw them. and will it make my flowmaster sound like a bumble bee. that is what the muffler shop who put it on said it would sound like if i cut off my cat. and also in the county i live and i get inspecter there is no more emissions so i can run it like this they just have to be able to see that is has the cats. so knocking them out would make more since than just cutting them off and running a straight pipe. like i said thanxs alot guys.

Keep the Converters, and just remove the OEM Muffler at the rear of the car. Replace this with straight pipe and you are good to go, and will still pass visual inspection. Plus, have a little rumble.

Many people do gut their converters, but just as many keep them and modify the rest of the exhuast to achieve a cool exhaust note.

zane, do you have a cardomain page or anything? i want to see your bird. Also are you on TccoA?
Yes, but it is older than ever and I can not recall the URL. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'll do my best to load some pics tonight so you can take a look.

Yes, I'm on TccoA. I seldom go there however. With the exception of a handfull of good folks there, I find the rest to be a bunch of concieted morons who think they know all and are hell bent on a continuous power trip.

I can't even count the number of times that I or others have been told that "It won't work" or "It can't be done," over there.

In each instance, less one or two, I've always found a way to make it work or do it anyway without issue.

A little imagination and creativity go a long way in accomplishing things.....

Sounds like you know your stuff.
Thanks!

I know the Fox Chasis Cars a little better, and honestly prefer them.

However, the MN12's are still a good deal of fun to work with.

I've been working on T-Birds, Cougars, Mark 7's, Mark 8's, for at nearly 8 years now. These cars tend to get addicting! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Do you take pm's?
Yep.

well here is a drawing of what my muffler job looks like i have labled everything......it doesnt look very good since i dont have my cad program like i use at school so i had to use paint. but i think im going to cut the pipe in front of the cat and then use a rod and knock them out. also im going to cut the pipe in front of my resantor and then knock it out.

i dont have the oem muffler anymore they took it off. but they put the flow master right after the resanotor to make it louder //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif which it didnt it still sounds like stock. also after i knock out the cats will it sound like a bumble bee.

also zane i liek the rear tail lights on my car but somebody at school for some reason took a bad and knock out my passanger side one. the small one on the side. do u know any companys that make euros or something that will fit on my car also i need a tad bit more bottom end. was thinking of putting in 4-10 gears or something but is there anything else i can do that is less expensive thanxs alot

as far as i know, there are NO euro lights for a t-bird. APC was thinking about producing some, but they are awful looking.

All there is. Is GTS light covers and Nightshade ( a spray tint).

I had the GTS on the front and back I got in an accident and smashed the front ones off.

Then, i had the rears on and my gf decided to go down a dirt road. Next morning I do to get to my car and I notice one of the covers is missing. She will never touch the car again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You can try and make your own if you have skill/time.

I'm getting some GTS Headlight covers again for the front becasue they look better then yellowed out lights. I may try nightshade on the rear but im debatin to see how much light accualy shines thru.

Here's What my car looked like with GTS covers. (Before Accident)

I replaced my hood, headlights, headlight bracket, touched up front bumper, tinted windows and got clear corners.

Here is after the accident (notice the front bumper)..

I did all this myself. Hehe, sorry I kind of got carried away with this but, i'm proud of my work i've put in to this and I LOVE to show it off.
