1990 Corolla HU installation

Just bought a new head unit and went out to install the thing in my 90 Toyota Corolla, and it looks as if I'm going to have to nearly remove the entire dashboard to do it. I really, really don't want to have to do that. The last three HUs I've put in other vehicles weren't a big deal. Two of them required a U-shaped tool. I guess I'll do what I have to do either way.

I must admit that it's the evening now and seeing everything was a little difficult, although I had flashlights - but I hope to hear someone say, "no, you won't have to do that" by morning... I looked in a repair manual and it was incredibly vague.

If anyone has done this install before, please let me know if there's anything special to it.

Thanks in advance,

Owen

You do need to do that. You have to take off the bottom of the dash, the radio is ISO mounted.

My last setup was actually in a 1990 Corolla, I had to take off the bottom half of the dash and the trim that extends from around the radio to the instrument panels. It's really not as hard as it sounds, just a few screws each and a bit of careful prying. When I took the HU out I had everything back in place in ~15 minutes.

Ahh, well I guess it won't be too bad, I just replaced the blower moter and some other miscellaneous stuff on that side of the interior, and it wasn't a big deal, just time consuming to dissasemble (but not reasemble obviously, as I knew how it came apart).

Another thing to cheer me up: I live in a high crime area, my neighbor has had his head unit stolen no less than 5 times living down here. I guess my car's setup will be a deterrent. And if it did get stolen, they'd soon realize it's a cheap brand that won't be worth much to pawn anyway :)

Thanks,

Owen
