166 db calibrated cheapie termlab for DMM's

For it to be a viable source of testing you want to have results that are both Accurate and Precise. Audiocontroll is neither. Term Lab is more Accurate and MUCH more precise. With AC, especially a worn one, one day you could do a 150 and the next only do a 145.... Both times youy did a 143 on the TL. So who knows if painting resin in the box actually helped if all you have is the AC to test with. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Well for comps yes accurate and precise are a must but for testing your system out...consistency is the key...

It really doesn't matter if it reads 5 db higher then the TL *as long as it is CONSISTENT*.

For example:

Test 1) You burp 140 @42 (repeat 3 times and see if its the same score)

Test 2) You adjust the volume up 1 or 2 clicks (burp 3 times again to see if the same/similar score registers)

...and so on...

Once you have established whether or not the mic is consistent then you can assume it is reliable or not...

Since JNTAR has a TL we also have the added bonus of having a reference mic to compare this mic to...

Back to Test1...if this mic puts up a conistent 140 @42 hz and the TL does a consistent 135 @ 42 hz...then you can safely assume that this mic is 5 db higher then the TL at the 140db and 42hz mark...

I assume this is the type of testing JN is planning...anything remotely close to this is still *VERY* much appreciated!!! Especially since he's doing this on his own merits!!

Anyways if it works out good...I have an EPIC-150 I can compare it to....

Accuracy is consistancy. Precision is getting a true measurement. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

A marksman can be accurate with out getting a bulls eye which is why grouping is taken into account along with where you hit on the target. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I totally agree with you, but if you want to go that deep you need to get two of the same units to test with also. That is to find out if the mics are consistent between themselves.

Good point...but then your are testing the mfg's QC?

Also the same meter that metered mine metered my cousins. He has Four 15 inch memphis mojos, with two 2000 watt memphis amps, and 6 batteries walled off right behind the front seat in a new grand prix and it showed a 159.
(talking about your setup)

yo no offense....

i kno im not the best w/ this audio stuff but i can tell thats not accurate anyday.

154 in a trunk car is hard as hell.

i think kenny barely gettin that with 2 18s and 4 1500 watt amps....

hell i seen 2 Mt's 15's in a TRUCK hit 150 on bassrace.....not 154.

id like to see a pic of that score.

(your score not your cuzin)

I have said numerous times that it wasn't on a termlab. No one around here has a termlab except audio express and they wont have a competition until the spring. So that is the only score I have so far. It was one of the guys that does the car audio installs at circut city. It was alot like the one being talked about here, being plugged up to a DMM.

I wish someone around here had a term-lab other than audio express, so I could get a more accurate score. Like I said though when I had the subs in a sealed box I got metered with 2 different meters. One said 147 and one was 148. The one that said 147 was the one that I used to meter it when I ported them which showed the 154. However neither one was termlab.

Some quick suggestions/thoughts:

1) Anyone you know that's been metered? You can compare yours to theirs for a rough approximation

2) A shop will usually meter you for a nominal fee

3) Make a vid for us, if you're flexing a good amount then it'll add to the believability

Ive got videos of when it was sealed. Haven't got new videos now that I got them ported.

This is the newest video I have again this is when they were sealed. This is with the subs facing the front:

Here is the first video I made with the subs facing the rear:

When I am done with it I will send it your way if you wish. That way we have 2 sets of tests to conclude tempature and atmosphere differences and changes in the mesurements vs. the termlab. .
That sounds great, I can do a video as well for the results and post it. I have a termlab and a Goldline both to test with, so that should be kinda neat, kinda like a "great 12 challenge" but with SPL meters.....too bad I dont know anyone with an AC meter //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif :( Maybe someone who has one can chime in with an offer to help? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

Sounds like a fun forum project that people here can really pick up some information from. Some people here dont even know what a Goldline or AC even looks like, so this will be informative to all....

Pretty good vids.

Hmm, I can imagine that it will be close to a 147-8 on an AC meter.

I would still doubt the 154 after just porting though?

I offered up my EPIC-150 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

For this round of testing though we should agree on a standard set of tests that we will all run...to get a baseline...beyond this is just gravy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thanks man! It got at least twice as loud after I ported them...some people even told me it was 3 times as loud.
