Probably lightened your load by half or more, and gained in strength with the birch. I really cannot see using anything other then birch personally. The price is the killer though.

here birch is only $10.00 per sheet more than the mdf. mdf is $35.00 per sheet.

I can catch Birch on sell here every now and then for about $35, but regular price is about $40 to $45. Mdf is cheap though, less then $30 a sheet for 3/4

just 3 months ago i was getting 3/4" mdf for $21.88 per sheet. now $34.00+ per sheet. birch is the same price as it was 3 months ago.
