15" MTX Thunder9500 vs JL 13W7

My friend wants to know which one is better. MTX's official site says

The importance of mechanical power handling is undeniable when it comes to subwoofers. Especially when one considers the output capability of today's high performance car amplifiers. A speaker may be able to handle 1000 watts thermally, but if it has a short voice coil and short excursion capability, it will not handle power well, mechanically speaking.

This quote is taken word-for-word from JL Audio's web site. We agree, and in all measurable areas, MTX Audio's new Thunder9500 Subwoofer smokes JL's W7!

And I mean the proof is in the numbers but he wants first hand knowledge if it's no trouble.

I've heard them both in good setups. I would still go with the W7 before the MTX. What you read on the MTX comparison web site is nothing much more than marketing hype. Don't get me wrong though, those 9500s will pound the living shiznot out of you in the right setup. Both subs deliver clean, low, and loud sound... but the JL, to me, sounds cleaner and has a flatter curve overall. Just remember, most of the differences will be in the install. Cheers

well yea MTX is saying that. haha now if were 3rd party...it may have a smidgen more credibilty.

Back when both subs had just come out i was at a local Jl dealer and they were saying how they wish they had kept Mtx in their store because they thought the 9500 was better than the w7 as a sql driver. This was me having a conversation with the shop manager as a friend and not as a customer. but other than that i cant contribute much as i havnt personally heard or have any experience with either woofer.

Yep. The MTX uses a high profile narrow surround, whereas the W7 uses the more traditional half roll wide surround.

MTX 9500 - 70SPL / 30SQ

JL W7 - 50SPL / 50SQ

for SPL the 9500 will take it

in SQ the MTX slacks

I kno them both well since ive owned both of them:naughty:
