Using the theory that doubling power gains 3db each time: If I pushed an '05-15" L7 with 250wrms, would it be 12 db's louder with the sub pushed with it's rated 1000wrms, Same box, same setup, only thing that changes is the amp. Is this right or wrong? (not that I am actually doing this, just an example lol)

but isn't 1000/250=4? so wouldn't you be quadrupling the power= 3dbx4=12 db's?

Basic math > you.

double 250 = 500. Then double the power again 500 + 500 = 1000.

Not everytime you add 250 watts...

And no. It is not a basic law of audio. More or less a simple guideline. It will not always be true.

No never really use it as a rule of thumb or expect it. You can see people in comps loose DB's on the mic from running more power. And you can see people gain 3bd from doing it.

So never expect it to be a solid rule of audio.
