i have a jl13w3 on a jl 500/1 tuned @ 27hz

ive heard my brothers 15" kicker L5 on a jl 500/1 tuned around 40hz

long story short, id take his system over mine.

im going to duplicate his sub setup, but it seems like every time i research a sub, someone always chimes in saying "why did you get THAT when you could of gotten THIS for half the price and its a better sub!"

with a craigslist found 15" L5 or L7 with a box from ebay im in about $225 give or take some.

is there any other sub up to par with or out performs the system im about to buy that i should look into? i want a 15

its just overall a greater setup imo. good sq, wider range of notes, moves more air, just more pleased with his setup. open his trunk and u feel the air hit you in the face (plus it helps he has a small trunk of an old g body monte carlo)

The lower tuned box would have a greater range of notes. What kind of music was played for the comparisions, whats the other vehicle involved? No way in hell the L5 has better sq than the w3. Sounds like the kicker is just in a fart box and you want something thats just loud and yours isnt as loud because of less cone area and a lower box tune.

my .02

the JL would have a much wider range if it was tuned higher, and I find it hard to believe that the L5 has better SQ than the w3
my dilemma is i dont know which to pick from two things. option one is spend over 100 and get a properly made box and hope it sounds as good as the L5, or option two is sell my sub/box and use the money to buy the L5 and a box which is i know will sound good

we just played a few raps songs, but not like detailed side by side comparisons. i have a 93 grand marquis, he has a 87 monte carlo.

ya thats kinda true.... just a little frustrating..

Also different cars will sound different even with the same setup. So even if u get the same box sub amp combo it most likely will not sound the same. I say spend $35 and build your own box tuned higher like 36-38 hz. My current box is at 45hz and it plays a broad range of frequencies but isn't loud with low notes. So when I rebuild I'm gonna tune to 35hz which is where I like my 12s, 40 for 10s and 30 for 15s. These are my preferences yours maybe different but these are good starting points for a good all-around system. Tuning lower generally yields more sq where as tuning higher generally makes more pressure. I will never buy a l5 because I have yet found a way to make them anything but loud. Just my .02 cents though

audiopipe 15' eye candy you can get 2 of them online for the price your looking to pay already...these things are powerful rated at 1,000 watts but can handle more if in the right box..ive seen a box get torn to peices and breaking drywall screws in the first 5 minutes it was hooked up

ive had 15 inch l7's and dont get me wrong they are impressive but no so much at the same time..also very cheaply built

no.

ITT: Audiopipe hater

can you figure out who it is?

OP: Forget JL and Kicker, they're commercialized crap. JL has good sound quality, but it has been stated over and over again that they are over priced. My recommendation is budget yourself 500-600 dollars and buy completely new equipment.

Just as a for-instance you could get this AQ750 Amp ($200) and get two SSA DCON 12's

this system would completely rock that L5 for two simple reasons, two 12" woofers have way more cone area than a single 15" and you will be pushing more power to them, not to mention those DCONs will sound great.
