15'' Avalanche ported or 18'' Avalanche sealed? (Ascendant Audio)

You will rip that speaker in half with 1600w. That spider is waaay too frail for that, especially in a ported box. Thermally I don't see the coil taking it either.
I wouldn't go over 800-1kW with it, regardless of box. The spiders/suspension absolutely are a factor in mechanical powerhandling. Thermal is largely determined by the coil/cooling system, obviously, but the suspension can still be a factor.

Lastly, if you care AT ALL about sound quality, I have no idea why you'd even consider a ported box in a car. Why not use that handy transfer function you get in a car (ZOMG!) and just go sealed?

The AVA is a solid woofer, but you're trying to overpower it by quite a bit. I agree with Nick, if you port that in a car with that much power, you're going to wind up with a broken sub. Mechnical powerhandling wouldn't be a huge concern in a proper sized sealed box, but the thermal powerhandling would still be an issue.

IMO, seal it, and use less power. 800w-1kW TOPS, and you're solid.
Kurt, Glad to see you were brought out of hiding for this great debate!

Explain what makes this spider "wayy to frail" to take 1400 (not 1600) watts with an 18" assembly in a ported enclosure please. Anything above tuning will yield such a small amount of movement, the spider wont even get worked to half it's potential.

No one said that spiders have no bearing on mechanical power handling. I said that they would not affect THERMAL handling in this situation, but yes, they could affect it, in a positive manner.

Here we go again with you and the "You cant use a ported box in a car" and have good quality of sound. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE KURT. You've been spilling that same line for what, 10 years here? People like the sound of ported enclosures in cars! We know you don't, but a LOT of us do!

Again, the argument started about the OEM spec coil, but who gave you guys a list of parts that I would be using to buid this "kid's" subwoofer?

Im as cool as a fan feller! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Here's the kids current enclosure and sub for reference.

Might still end up with 2 blown SE 12s that I'll end up sending to you to convert to 15s ect. ect.

It really just depends how much I am willing to spend on a new amp/electrical.

Thanks a bunch Dave.

Kevin

Who said I was a kid btw lol? I am 18 but I didn't mention it in here I think haha.

Haha, I still don't mind doing the 15'' Avalanche because I can have a bunch of trunk space left over by switching back and forth to a sealed box.

I am just so lost lol.

Flatwind SE 10s, Flatwind SE 12s, Flatwind SE 15s, 15 Ava, or 18 Ava.

Oh lawl.

SEs will cheaper than the Avalanche, I just need to budget for a bigger monoblock and a batt for the back.

Kevin

Ported in the car rules!!!!!

I will say that I ran (4) Avalanche 15's in my suburban on less than 1000 watts each. 15 cuft tuned to 32 Hz and a 25 Hz subsonic filter. Bottomed them on more than one occasion. . .

I am picking up a 05 XXX 12'' local for one hell of a deal on monday. Absolutely PERFECT condition. I am just going to **** with it as a 12'' for a week or two till I order a 15'' basket and recone from dave.

Going to drive it with a RD 1750.1V2! 1730rms at 1 ohm at 12.8V!

Finally the teg is getting some REAL power.

Anyone care to guess the price of the XXX?

Kevin

Without question...ported 15" over a 18" sealed any day of the week. A ported type box will always have a better transient response over a sealed box if designed properly. There are sound quality world champions with ported type enclosures. A great candidate that will take a top position in Iasca this season is using (2) 15" ported DD 9515's.

Like David mentioned, above tuning there will be very little cone displacement hence the spider will not be effected. In addition, the enclosure itself can be designed to have low cone displacement. However, it's necessary to take caution when doing so since cone movement is a major part in the cooling of the coil, especially with a whole lot of power.
