15'' Avalanche ported or 18'' Avalanche sealed? (Ascendant Audio)

Looking into having an AA Avalanche made but I only have enough room in the trunk(hatch actually) to fit a 15'' ported or a 18'' sealed. I previously had a custom flatwind RE SE 15'' ported in my hatch and it was nice and loud off 1000 watts. Well now I am moving to a new sub and up to 1400 watts to see what my car can really do.

What do you guys think? 15 ported or 18 sealed off 1400 watts? I am torn to say the least.

I really dig the wow factor of an 18'' woofer and especially in a little car such as my Integra, but I want to do what is best.

Kevin

18" sealed for sure bro. I've played with THOUSANDS of subs, and plenty of 15" and 18" Avalanches', and the 18 is MEAN! It'll get (atleast 'sound') lower and sound louder (whether it is or isn't depends on the install and enclosure specs/build).

Either way, you WIN!

dont throw 1400rms to it...you will ruin it..

I would go 18" sealed....15" ported tuned really low would sound good to though..Its a win win either way you go..

and Where are you getting these from..I have one in my HT but I havent seen many around in a while

If you can get 6ish sealed id think you could squeeze around 5 ported...try to get every last bit..not sure how much needed for a 18 avalance but theres quite a few 18s that will work well in 5 cubes ported (net)...although kinda on the low side..

Id prob do the 18..you had a 15" off 1000 watts..why move to a diff 15 with 400 more watts? Id try something new.

I was one if the first users of the avalanche. Chad used my tumult back at that time to do the comparision tests that were posted on a couple of forums.

Have used both drivers ported and sealed in car and HT.

15 ported will win this battle.

I ran 4 15's sealed in my HT for 4 years. Heavy low end EQ and they were awesome.

I actually ran the 18 in 4.5 ft @ 32 Hz for a few weeks, because Chad wanted me to see what it would do. It was pretty darn awesome. I liked it better than the 5 ft sealed.

As someone already said, 1400 is too much. With impedance rise, you more than likely will not see that much anyway. I was told by someone who would definitely know //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif that driver will only handle 800 true RMS long term.

I am looking into having Dave(PSI) build it for me. He has the motor already and will build the coil configuration to my desire so the rms is kinda up to me.

Brian I am confused, 15 ported, or 18 ported?

Kevin

15 ported if it was me.

If you had the 18, it would be worth a try porting it, but if I am selecting one to buy, go with the 15.

I think they were rated 800. . .

Fs 15.7 Hz

Qms 3.5

Qes .334

Qts .305

Vas 300.6 L

Re 3.2 ohms

Znom* 4 ohms

Xmax 27 mm

Sd 749 cm2

Mms 269 g

Vd 4.04 L

Pnom 800 watts

Le 2.4 mH

Cutout 14.125"

Diameter 15.5"

Depth 7.875"

I ran mine on a RE 35.1 doing about 1100-1200 watts on a good day (I thought at the time it was 1500, but it really was not with my electrical system //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif ). If I was not careful, I could get a nice smell from the coils. Short periods of time, it was great.

I ran 4 of them on a Lanzar Opti4000D in my suburban with a good electrical system and I could bottom the coils every now and then. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

They are definitely nice subs. I sometimes wish I had not sold mine, but the plan is still to build a crazy IB setup in my new house.
