12" XXX versus 15" XXX...

I fell in love with low tuned ported enclosures ever since i built one as opposed to sealed. SO, from now on...all my daily setups will be in ported tuned low. PLUS, i'd rather have a killer 12 ported...and it be redic loud than one 15 sealed that is comparable to the 12" ported. peace

As they say, SQ is subjective. We each have our own personal tastes in what sounds best. But according to RE, the sealed box is where its at for SQ. Low ported is SQL. I personally dont see the disadvantage of having the output of the 12 ported, and the SQ of a sealed enclosure (for the 15).

^^ haven't they already done that? a 12 ported would use the 12 to it's potential and get as loud as the 15 sealed with similar box size. however the 15 could always be sold for more money than a 12, could always be ported if he were to get a different car (which would own the 12 ported) and etc etc. it all depends on what you're looking for. in terms of output its a tossup, in terms of sq the 15" should have it. but if you listen to a lot of rap and plan on keeping the sub for a while, a 12" should suffice

Hmm don't mea nto hijack the thread, but I have a question that pretty much fits right in here. What would you say would be better, 2 15's sealed or 2 12's ported?

Of the same exact brand/line? Same as what has been said in this thread, it's up to opinion! As well as what you prefer...EXTREME SQ (Sealed) or nice output and still good SQ (ported). In the end, it's up to you and your preference! peace

Of course, like the canned response says, its all in the install. But yeah generally speaking the advantage the 12 gains over the 15 for being ported is approx the same (in theory) as the gain the 15 receives for its added cone area. (did that make sense? lol) The ported enclsoure will give the sound a certain characteristic that the sealed wont, which is where personal preference comes in.

No one has touched on my first decision maker... price... If the 12 and 15 will be close in both SQ and SPL, why dont you just get the cheaper 12 and port it? Why get a 15 and throw it in a sealed box and not let it get even close to its potential? Go with the 12.

I believe the price difference is only about $30 and when you are talking about a $400 + investment I dont see the extra 30 as that much. FOr $30 more I personally would rather have a sub that has the potential to get so much louder, whether or not I am going to push it to its full potential. Plus, if he ever gets another car that has room for a 4-5 cu ft box then he doesnt have to upgrade to a 15 or buy another 12 if he wants to go louder. Ultimately, it could end up saving him a lot of money in the long run if he decides he wants more.

Getting down to the wire here, guys. I'm ordering sometime today...

I just talked to Ryan at RE, and he said go 12 ported, and it will have slightly more output than a 15 sealed.

Looks like it's a close call. I'm probably gonna go with a 12" ported, simply because of the number of votes that I've gotten in comparison to the 15.
