12" W6 not impressed

Well just heard a JL 12" w6 in an audio shop and wasn't impressed. It was being powered by a 2,000 watt amp so it was getting plenty of power. It got pretty loud, was in a special vented enclosure. BUT my old flat cone 10 k's from elemental designs killed it in the sq and spl category and they're in a sealed box. And I only paid a total of $240 for them, while a single w6 would have cost me $350 from that audio shop.

Someone I know that has a 13kv2 in a sealed enclosure seems pretty well matched in performance. The 13 kv2 that I heard didn't get quite as loud, but it was in a sealed box and sounded better than this w6 did.

You cant really judge a sub in a sound room well.

A sub will sound alot different in the store then it does in your car.

Many shops set up their demo boards half assed as well using the wrong enclosures and the wrong amplifiers with stupid amounts of bass boost and gains cranked way too high.

That's one of the main reasons I hate dealing with the local audio shops in my town. They love to "pull the covers" over your eyes.

It was a special enclosure designed for the sub that it was in. It was an Earthquake amp. The sub obviously wasn't pulling the full 2k watts but it does show the amp was putting out ample power to run it. Their amps were setup with either 8 or 4 gauge wire depending on the amp.

Happy B-day BTW.

Thanks. Got myself a 15" magnum for my birthday, won't be at my house until July sometime though. I'll have to take it back by this audio shop and show them it. They have a mentality that JL rules and JL is the only way to go. I'm sure their jaws will drop when they hear the magnum. They hadn't heard of any of the online audio companies I mentioned but I can't blame them. I didn't know about these online places until I came on CA a few years ago. If I'm not happy with the magnum is there anyone hear interested in it? This is going to be my first 15" sub setup and I don't know that I'll like it. We shall see.

They told you it was "a special enclosure", this does not mean that it is.The JL is a good sub period.

I'll be honest I don't know anything about JL enclosures, but here's a pic of the enclosure they had the w6 in.

And I'm not saying JL sucks, I'm simply saying they weren't what I expected. It was a let down.

Once again it was a sound room. Never go by what you hear in those rooms. Unless youve heard it in a true car setup with the proper equipment, then you cant talk.

I'm pretty confindent that if they would have taken my sub and box and hooked it up with the same equipment mine would still have sounded better, but I will agree. Until I do that I guess we can't be 100% sure. I can say my dad's old dual 12" rack system made by good old Scott killed the w6 in sq and spl, but it also would kill my current dual 10" setup. That system was amazing and I don't think the amp put out more than 500 or 600 watts total. Amazing!

I have heard a W6 and W7 in a sound room at HI FI Buys(tweeter.com). Was not to impressed with either. Maybe I just do not like the sound. To me my RL-p in my house sounded better than the w6.
