The Hope that lies WITHIN
I have a Silverado extended cab, which I have been doing a complete rebuild on the stereo system. The build is located here if you want to take a look. http://www.caraudio.com/forums/car-audio-build-logs-cars-trucks-suvs/515849-1999-silverado-alpine-build.html

I'm nearing the end of my build, with the only thing left to do is finish the box and down the road replace front door speakers. I am building the box myself, and it will be sealed, going under the back seat with no seat lift. From what it looks like right now, there is about 1.15-1.25cuft per sub with the box I'm building. I have an alpine pdx 1.1000(1000rms at 2 or 4 ohm, and usually underrated putting out over 1100rms) that I have put in the car already. The real question is, is what subs do I go with? I plan on going with type r's, the 12 inch. I'm pretty set on type r's but am open to suggestions. I just would like some opinions on what would be better for me. I have around 150 per sub, so 300 total to buy two subs. Now I know there are a lot of people on here who just go for killer bass(not what I'm looking for), so I'm going to explain what I'm looking for in the subs. I Listen to almost every kind of music, but most of the time you'd catch me listening to metal and rock music. When I listen to metal music I do like to have bass, because there are times when there are big bass hits, or low notes that I like to here/feel when it plays in the song. I do listen to rap and some dub step as well, so I do like to have bass in those types of songs, however I do like when I can still hear the music and not have it drowned out by the bass. I would like for the subs to pick up the lows notes, and I do like to turn it up every once in a while to here some heavy bass. In a nutshell I'm looking for sound quality, but I want the spl on hand when I want it. So the question is, do I go with 10" subs or 12"?

I can suggest to go with a single Image Dynamics IDMAX 12 in a box of your choice. It's just a little over your budget, but it's probably what you're looking for.

In my opinion, if you listen mostly rock or metal or something else musical, then SPL capability is not used at all. You can go with strictly SQ sub. For this time of music, the primary concern is to be able to blend the subwoofer well with the front stage, so you need low distortion and good midbass output. Subs with proven capability for doing this well are Image Dynamics IDQV3, Peerless XXLS, Dayton Reference and even Infinity Kappa. If only 10% of your music is rap, I'd probably just choose ones of these. However, for rap, sometimes bass is _the_ music and the need for high SPL is understandable. In this situation, a lot of people seem to prefer the IDMAX. It has good SQ, but less than IDQ. However, SPL is good and it matches your amp RMS rating (not that it needs to). Other "SQL" subs are RE XXX (the old one), Alpine Type X, JL W7, and several others. However, it just seems like people tend to like IDMAX SQ a bit more, but this could be all subjective.
