1 18" or 2 12"

Which setup would be louder and still sound ok doing so (SQL 40% SQ and 60%SPL)? 1 18" Fi Q $309, 1 18" Fi BL $309, or 2 Alpine Type R $260. They will be ran off either a Planet Audio 2250 or a PA3000b (forget model, but somewhere around 2000 watts at 1 ohm). Space isn't too big of an issue, its going in the back of a 98 Chevy Blazer, thinking there is about 7 cubes to work with. I'm open for other suggestions as well, spending limit is 300 bones. Thank you.

Ok if you dont already know.....the Bl is SQL (more towards SPL) and Q is for SQ.....the 18 is more cone area.....Fi makes really good products!!! and my theory is that Fi cares about quality and service more that just make money (low prices) Alpine is a company that is like kicker and has a reputation....I am not positive but when alpine makes there speakers they are sort of like a big factory/assembly line...so it is really up to you.......

um the type R's are very good subs and so are the fi's so imo if you want spl more than sq i would go with the R's cuz they are more surface area than one 18, which usually= louder

How do you figure?

Fi Q 18": Sd: 1210cm^2

Alpine Type R 12": 480cm^2 * 2 = 960cm^2

Fi Q has 20% more Sd.

Not to mention the Fi Q has nearly 10mm more linear excursion.

Pair of 12" Type-R's have a Vd of 1.73l

Single Fi Q 18" has a Vd of 3.27l

Single Fi Q 18" has 47% more displacement than a pair of Type R 12's (that's a difference of approximately 3db).

Hype-R's can get loud in the correct enclosure....but a pair of 12" Type R's clearly do NOT have an advantage in either cone area or displacement.

is int it two 12's are the equivalent of one 15 and two 15's are the equivalent of a 18" sub right?that's what I heard
no, its more like

2 8" > 10"

2 10" > 12"

2 12" > 15"

2 15" > 18"

2 18" > all(not rly but..)

based on cone area.

i would lean towards btl 18 hold the maters.
Don't have enough for the BTL, but just got some extra cash and was thinking two 15" SSDs, or Type Rs. Since you guys seem to like the cone area, the SSDs have a Sd of 800cm^2 (somewhere around there) and two would give a total of 1600 meaning more cone area than the one 18"... but specs on paper and actual experience sometimes (most the time) differs. My spending limit as of now is $400 (give or take acouple bucks), thanks for the input so far, keep the comments coming.

P.S. Are the SSD subs SQL or what, haven't heard much about them?

I've ran both a 18" BTL and (2) type R's, and have tested both on a Planet audio 2250D ...

The R's in 5 cubes @ 34hz had good sq and got really loud. Be carefiull though because that 2250 will heat thise coicecoils up tio the point that they will get stinky.

The 18 was in 7cuft @ 32hz and it didn't have the sq that the R's did, but it was way way way louder to the point that it would hurt. It also flex'd the vehicle alot more.

I'd say go with the 18" BL if you can. It should perform pretty close to the BTL that I have. You will never have to worry about voicecoil either if you get it.
