kicker ex1000.1

I just recieved my kicker ex1000.1, and it comes with a remote bass knob. Im just wondering about how safe it is to use? it has 0-15db settings. do i set my gains with it set at 0 or 15 db? does it make a difference to when im setting gains? Im worried about clipping it without realising...
