gain setting dmm

I am trying to set my gain using a dmm, but the dmm has to settings for AC volts. it has 500V, and 200V. When i set it on 500, and turn up the volume, it shows 0.00. When i set it on 200V, it will show 00.1, 00.2,00.3 as i turn up the volume. In the very useless booklet that came with the dmm it...
