I've had lots of experience with the CDA-9886. Done everything from big to small setups and never had any trouble. The interface is incredible. My opinion is to go with that one, but that is just one man's opinion.

No setting should have to be changed. You may have a defective iPod cable. The best way to find out is to exchange your iPod cable for a new one. If that doesn't work, contact Kenwood USA.

Make sure your iPod has the latest updated firmware. When Alpine released that unit they made it only able to read the latest firmware at the release time of unit.
