My Rainbow Garmaniums that I had installed a few days ago were initially one of the brightest setups I've ever had in one of my cars. This is just because of the tweeter position though... they're in the factory location above the mids and are angled inward so they're higher and more on-axis...

I think you can still get the introductory $350 price on the Sundown SAX-100.4 so I'd suggest that. I owned a 300/4 and a 500/1 and JL makes good products but the Sundown puts out more power and actually has more options.

In my past cars I've just sealed off the holes with large pieces of sound deadening, is there an advantage to using plexiglass under the deadening for cutouts/holes?

If you're willing to spend $250 on them why not spend that money to upgrade your front stage instead to get the sound you're looking for?

I bought a Behringer ECM8000 RTA mic for $50 and you can get M-audio mobile USB pre-amps on ebay for around $100. Using these with a laptop you have a pretty accurate RTA (I'm hoping). My mic and pre-amp get here in a few days so I'll report back if the results are positive.
