So the FBI can tell that a bullet and not shrapnel or a belt buckle caused what you describe as a scratch on his ear? A scratch that was spontaneously bleeding as of July 20th, but healed without a trace by the first week of August?
What are the telltale signs?

A 5.56 is the same a .223, run at higher pressure. So it would cause MORE damage, with other circumstances being the same. You can shoot .223 in a rifle chambered for 5.56, but it's a BAD idea to shoot the 5.56 in a rifle chambered for .223.
Try some education before you spout off about things you don't know.

Take a look at these two pictures. Notice the rim of his ear is smooth in the first picture jagged in the second picture? The ear heals extremely fast.
