really thinking about putting zv4 recones on my zv3 motors just wondering who else has done it and how the results are. sundownz said it can be done but the motor isnt built to handle the high excursion so just wondering what problems have happened what power was running and what not.

Yeah your basically going to end up crashing into the backplate on the rearward stroke most likely. Won't be much of an upgrade I don't think as I don't think the originals were limited by spiders or surround very much, they've always been pretty long throw drivers.

@splaudio

He made a sundown x with zv4 surround

im wondering if im going to gain anything besides a bada** surround or just end up having to do more recones shortly after

How long have yoy been playing it. Full tilt on bc3500? I'm putting mine in a 4th order.
Sorry for such a late reply but my gain is at "1 o'clock" if that makes sence. It's definitely louder than it was when I first got it. Get stinky though when I play down to 20hz, hahaha.

While the v.3 motor has less excursion capacity than the v.4 it still has 47.5mm of clearance in it -- the v.4 has 62.5mm of clearance (bottomless... beyond what the coil allows).

47.5mm in no slouch... Jared has v.3 motors with v.4 parts right now in "The Beast" Jeep -- working well. It IS possible to bottom them out with the new suspension -- but it isn't going to just "accidentally" happen... as it's still nearly 4" p-p and that takes some juice to achieve.

As a safety measure we can down-size the spider to the next size down for a v.4 re-cone on a v.3 motor; we actually did that with Jareds... used a 9.25" instead of 10.125" spider on his 15s. The new frames support several different size spiders.
