yet another sealed box question

With a sealed, downfiring box, I would like to know what is suggested. In the picture below, the dotted line signifies where the subs are mounted, 1" above the floor. Would it be better to carve out some area where the speaker can have air move freely (in front of the sub, not behind), like article b below? It would seem to me that the top example would constrict air in front of the sub, and muffle the sound since it will be enclosed.

yes. cut it out and make little feet. otherwise, well.. you wont be moving air in the cabin, just in the box and that part thats aimin at the floor.

why wouldn't you add the feet. how would it work without them? only reason i know to do down firing is to protect the sub. does it have any other advantages?

this is going under the seat of an extended cab sierra.. very limited space. i did downfiring because i heard it was the best for ext cab pickups.
