Yay for fiberglass - version bavarian3

thanks for the support guys. as far as the finish....carbon fiber has crossed my mind, but i dont know, some black carpet would be nice since my interior is black and grey. or i may just do grey carpet. all i know is im not touching vinyl.

yeah, well i can tell u this stuff definetly takes time. its not hard at all though, just kinda gets tedious and frustrating at times. how much would a shop charge for what im doin here?

well since its only one set maybe in the $300 range, but many shops if they are smart, might have a mold from previous installs to save them time and mistakes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/idea.gif.5acb6a39a9b92425414c316dda202bad.gif

ah ok thats not that bad.

Most shops would charge quite a bit for what you're doing. Tack on a fair amount depending on how you wanted them finished.

I'd paint them gloss black or carpet them grey or black. Since one kick doesn't have a laer of fiberglass on them, put it in the car and see how the black looks and matches. You'll get somewhat of an idea.

what will i need to do to paint besides bondo puddy and sanding?
Body filler.

Power sander (I learned the hard way, spend the $25 on a power sander and get it over with).

80, 100, 150, 220 etc grit sandpaper.

I wouldn't suggest the Bondo brand body filler. It works alright, but Mark got me to try something different. Worked much better.

When I didn't have the time to go and get the different brand, he suggested I add a little bit of resin to the Bondo body filler. Makes it a little more workable. No exact science, but you don't want it too runny - just enough to thin it out a little bit.

hey bavarian- just FYI, you dont need to add any glass layers to those kicks after you finish fleecin'

they are way strong to withold midrange 6.5's with just the fleece. just mix up a good amount of resin and pour it inside and get all the corners and the inside of the fleece, and you should be set.

mine work fine with no layers of glass.

and dont do any sanding until you put your body filler on (saves a crapload of time) unless you have already glassed and have werid bubbles\funny hairs sticking up.

believe me, dont glass kicks- glass the mould, resin the fleece- carpet. thats all. its a waste of time to glass over the fleece unless you are using them for um... somthing structural? i dont think 50~150w is gonna flex them enuf where you can tell the difference //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

lookin good tho!

alright guys some good news and some bad news. one of the kicks is done besides the bondo and carpet. everything came out great, well..sorta. As i cut out the fleece covering the speaker hole, my heart sank to the floor and noticed the walls of the enclosure were really close to where the speaker will be mounted. Luckily the driver side turned out to fit fine, however the passenger side does not (**** huge ass ID mids). This basically leaves me with 2 options.

#1 cut out the space of the wall that is blocking the magnet from going in all the way, lay some tape over it and reglass that part so it fits around that.

#2 cut out the space of the wall that is blocking the magnet from going in all the way and use that as a vent for the enclosures. I was plannning on venting out the enclosures anyway, i am just unsure if this will be the best spot, and how big of a vent is ideal.

let me kno what u guys think, here are the pics.

2 kicks...

the driver said that fits perfectly fine...

and its hard to tell from the pic, but this is where the wall of the fleece covering u can see inside the enclosure that it gets too close for the mid to fit.

that sounds like the best idea
yes it defiently was. i fnished everything up today and added all the finishing bondo. now all i have to do is sand //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif then cover em with carpet. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/coolflash.gif.4f9740e1268764cfe452b9259e375e3b.gif pics later tonight.
