xcon because its a solid sub, but hardly mention around here.
And I think the xcon comparied to a BL would be a bit better balanced, seems like the BTL would be a step up
Depends what your looking for in a woofer. The Xcon uses shortening rings and has 30mm of xmax. I would consider that a major step over a BTL, let alone a BL, but it really depends on your goals. Musically the xcon gets the easy nod, but just for making noise and not breaking I'd give the edge to the BTL. No hate on FI, just different design goals. The xcon seems more akin to a supersub like a brahma, xxx, or lms. The BTL is alot more mundane, although a solid design for what it is.

Touche'

I suppose OP original goals with the subs should have been considered as well. I def agree with the above statement.

Xcons get my vote, just for something a little unique.

Can you explain what shortening rings do and how the xmax affects SPL/SQ?

i'm plotting my next 15 for next year. if getting an atomic apx proves difficult, i'm shooting for a new ssa xcon or fi btl. both are around the same price. i hate either or threads as much as the next person, but any help in deciding which to pick would be greatly appreciated. Whichever will receive 3500wrms, maybe more if i change amps next year.
RMS on an XCON is a conservative 1750w RMS, I don't think it will handle 3kw+ daily.

Shorting rings don't really do anything for Xmax, that has more to do with how well the motor is designed.

Shorting rings directly affect the inductance of the system, mainly the coil it self (read up on inductance). For the most part, a driver with a low inductance will benefit from better transient response (the change from one frequency to another), extended bandwidth, as well as heat dissipation. Shorting rings are generally thick rings of copper or aluminum that aid in pulling heat off the coil and dissipating it through the rest of the motor.

You might not find much using google on shorting rings, search for Faraday rings instead, same thing different terminology.
