Xbox 360 gurus - question about installing games...

I have a 360 Elite and I'm trying to install a few games to the HDD, however every game I'm trying to install to the HDD fails and I get a disc read error...I was thinking it was the optical drive since this happened on 6-7 games, but someone I know said that he thinks I need to be connected to live in order for this install to HDD feature to work. I don't currently have an Xbox live account otherwise I would sign in and try it out...anyone know for sure?

well truth is, I have an old account, I just need to re-activate it, the trouble is my Xbox is extremely far from my router so I have to get the wifi adapter and I just don't feel like spending more money on peripherals right now, I don't see the need for me being a less than casual gamer...idk, I imagine I will buy the adapter sooner or later...

aside from me being a ***, any other opinions on the matter?

I have a PS3...
but I prefer 360 for sports games...
hehe, I was just messing with you, I also own both systems. Easiest thing to do is go to partsexpress.com and get yourself a long ethernet cable. I got a 75ft cable for like 8 bucks, that should be long enough to go from your router to 360 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

no worries...i'll probably end up doing that to test this out, I have a whole box of cat cable so I can make my own, but that's just a temp solution, my wife will crap bricks if I have 100' of cable running through the house...plus with the kiddies, that's just inviting disaster...

Just tuck it under where the wall meets the carpet. It's only a problem if you have to cross a doorway...

You DO NOT have to be connected to live in order to copy games to the hdd. Your optical drive must be bad or you have severely damaged discs. You probably already know but I'll state it anyways. You still have to have the game in the drive to play it from HDD. Otherwise people would be stealing xbox360 games like crazy with retail consoles.

yea I figured, it didnt make sense to me, but I called Xbox support yesterday, and I swear the Indian lady told me the exact same thing about having to be connected to live, so I was like, alright whatever I'll try it...the more logical idea is that the drive is messed up, it's definitely not the disc because I've tried every game I own...I knew about having to have the disc in the drive to play installed games, I'm not copying the games for that purpose, I wanted to reduce load time/screen freezing for NBA Live, someone said it would help a bit because of all of the replays...

meh...

You do not have to be connected to Live to copy the games onto the HDD. It's your drive or the disc is too scratched up. Also, did you check you see if you still have enough space on the HDD? You also have the newest version of the Xbox XMB right? I think that's required for it to work.

It's pretty nice to have games install on the HDD though. As you probably know, you will still need to have the game inside the drive in order to play it. I just like it because that noisy drive doesn't spin anymore since everything is saved onto the HDD already.

yea there is nothing on my HDD just some game data here and there, I believe it says 102GB free if I'm remembering correctly...I'm thinking it's the opti-drive, I hear it spinning a lot when the game freezes up...

Probably so, but my drive spins like crazy even under normal usage. That's why I saved all of my games on the HDD. Does MS order like the cheapest drives possible or something, cause it seems to the be the loudest out of all of the drives that I know.
