You install steam and you can buy games direct from them. Not sure about cheaper since Left 4 dead sells for 49.99 on steam and thats what i payed in stores.

basically it is a gaming engine.. You can buy games through it and play other people online or play with comps offline if you want.. there are all kinds of games from counterstrike to gta
