are you looking for an lcd then?
if you are looking for a crt the specs on newer crt monitors havent changed over the years, maybe a slightly better dot pitch, but screen res is going to be whatever you set it at anyway and it depends on screen size and how small you want the text
my monitor was used at most for a few hours a day in a non smoking environment and was calibrated from day one using AVIA guide to home theater to adjust the contrast, brightness, tint and color which extends the life considerably over a monitor which has been used with those maxed all the time
if you are looking for a good deal age shouldn't be as important as the condition of the monitor and the environment it was used
was it used 8-10 hours a day at an office? was it turned off or did it run a screen saver 24/7 for years? was it in direct sunlight and is the case faded? was it used in a smoking environment? were the contrast and brightness cranked all the way up?
i'm not trying to defend my monitor or lecture you because you don't want it, i am just trying to point out a few questions you may want to ask before you shoot something down because it is too old or whatever. you may also want to include more details on what you want and what you are willing to pay
i just shipped a package 4 days ago that weighed 24 pounds and it cost $35 to ship and wasn't as large as my monitor box, so expect to pay about $50 for shipping on a 17" monitor cause they weigh about 35-40 pounds packed
good luck
