Chances are, you'll run into major problems trying to install a hard drive, as your boot drive into a computer without the same hardware.

Doubt it. If its already got Windows preinstalled it will pretty much be plug and play. Or if you have DVDs get Paragon backup and recovery for free and create a backup, request an blank HD, and reimage it with the backup. Thats what I did with my RMA HD in my laptop. Had everything back in an hour or so.
