I'm going to use seat spacers so I can fit a box with a mounting depth of around 8.5". What mounting depth do I really need at the least?

Depends on the subs. Most will need at least a 1/2 clearance on the back of the subs for ventilation and another 2" for excursion

I've found some Sundown SA12's on Craigslist for $150 a piece for two. I've also found another who would sell a single for $150.

Are you gonna have enough space for 12s ? To small of a box will be very peaky and not get very low

I'm looking to get more cone area so that they're louder, and it seems like it's possible with the box I'm building.

You just won't have proper space for 12's... and it would sound much better if you went with smaller woofers. You can get plenty of output from smaller woofers too if that's what you're worried about.

I'd buy the SA12's for that price and sell them but I definitely wouldn't run them without a proper enclosure, it would sound like garbage

That's what I was afraid of, but I think I should have enough space. If not, I was considering just one 12. I need to contact someone who can give me dimensions for a box under the seat. I've still got a lot of learning to do.

Why would it have to be that elaborate?
