why are torn surrounds ok?

i am looking to buy new subs, and i am probably going to get used ones to save $$$. I see a lot of subs that have holes, tears, etc in the surround but they always say it doesn't affect sound at all. i am not a speaker whiz, but i can only imagine that torn surrounds have to affect the performance somehow. is that just sellers trying to make their speakers sound like a good deal? how is it possible that damaged speakers can sound just as good as new?

what is correctly fixed? is that speaker glue stuff any good? a lot of times i see fixed surrounds that look like garbage. is that the glue or a bad job?

I've never had a torn surround but I have seen more than a few that had small holes punched through the surrounds due to someone not paying attention to what they were doing while mounting the sub(s) in the intended location and made a slip with their screwdriver....

Properly repaired they should present no performance issues later. Silicone sealant appplied in thin coats FTW!

with my mag i fixed it with silicone and measured how loud it was before and after i punched a hole in the surrroud fixed with silicone and it was the same

SPL shouldn't be effected

only the CMS of the surround should be effected but not really anything important or probably even measurable

all that could effect is Fs... possibly making it stiffer or looser by a few thousandths of a mm/N
