i see punk0rama in this thread...do you by any chance know if i invite someone that doesnt keep a ratio up will i be automatically booted or will i get a warning or what?
i know you know about these sites a lot more than most people so any info would be nice

If you invite 10 users and they all got banned, you'd be in hot water for sure. On the surface, OiNK holds a very tough front to discourage cheating and inviting poor users, but they are reasonable. If you're a PowerUser+ and have been a good contributor, you'll get the benefit of the doubt. If you've invited several cheaters, they will probably approach you and see what your story is before they ban you, unless it is blatantly obvious you are trying to manipulate the system or being careless.

For those having ratio problems, here are some suggestions I posted on DIYMA the other day.

1. Always seed. Yes, the energy bill will hurt, but it's worth it. Never stop seeding.

2. MAKE SURE YOU'RE CLEVER! This should be number 1, because it's so important. If you need to know more information, I can help, but it basically means that you must have the port you are using for your torrent client forwarded. You can get a how-to on that through http://www.portforward.com or by browsing the OiNK help section.

3. If you are downloading mp3's that are more than a month old, only download those ripped as V0.

4. Upload what you have as FLAC or V0. If there's 320kbps rip up there, you can still upload a v0 (and you're likely to get more downloads than it already has). If there's a FLAC already but it doesn't have a log, you can still upload your FLAC with a log and the other will be deleted.

5. Know the swarm and what's popular. I am fortunate that I am on a computer probably 18 hours a day and like Indie music; I jump on a download as soon as it is available and have it completed before the rush of users comes to download it. This gives me a lot more people to seed it back to.

6. Use the requests feature. Go through the list of requests and click the + sign beside those that are popular and interest you. When the request is filled, you'll get a PM notifying you of such; this helps you get to the popular stuff quickly.

7. Don't download huge files unless you're the first to get there. Because of ratio issues, most users are not willing to download a big file and you'll be stuck with 30GB downloaded on Xmen comics with no one users to seed back to.

hmm so cheating is the only big issue?

obviously if you go above 5 gigs and dont have the required ratio you cant download again until your ratio is well enough, or you will be banned

im sure if everyone you invite though turns out to be simple leechers they might take some sort of action

you can also sort by leechers, in the browse section, and just download the torrents with massive amounts of leechers

That actually doesn't say anything at all about ur connection speed. And saying u want to get every single album just makes it seem more like ur gonna leech than run.

well i didnt mean it like i sit home all day and just dl music i got more then enough to upload, im just not to sure how the ratio thing works but once i get the hang of it then its not a problem

As for getting banned or anything, as long as you don't invite people who were banned before, or people cheating the system you'll be fine. And actually, all they will do is take away your ability to invite others.

That's risky because there's usually a reason there are a lot of leechers. Unless it is a torrent uploaded in the last couple of days, there won't be many leechers (which is why it is so hard to maintain ratio).

9 times out of 10, those "leechers" are people who only downloaded part of the file (like 1 or 2 songs, or the first 10 editions of the comic, or something to that extent) and this often tricks people into downloading in the hopes there will be a lot of people to seed back to, when that's really not the case.

yea the only thing i did was make sure i didnt go above the 5 gig (or whatever it is) "probation period" if you will until my ratio went up...it took a while but once it started going up thats when i felt more comfortable downloading...but jesus 15.0 ratio?!
