What's the deal with...

never said i was tracing it back to his address. just stated he shared an ip. which on a forum like this indicates they have access the forum from the same computer
HOW THE FUCK DID HE USE MY COMPUTER???

I'm being serious, by the way. I swear to God I don't even have a friend or relative named Peter. Given, that's his real name anyways. I bought the computer new, not used. Is this at any way affiliated with the hacker?

Im no expert on this, but I believe MoT is incorrect. The IP address refers to your router/modem, not a specific computer. Two people in the same house on diff puters will register the same IP addy.

Apparently peter was parked in front of your house stealing broadband from you via your wireless router. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Wrong...the IP trace will not get that far...no further than the routers controlled by the ISP. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

God I'm so confused...
No one can trace a TCP/IP address back to an actual physical address. The closest they are going to get is a router at the ISP which was the first hop across the Net from your personal computer. And they will unlikely be able to get the actual address of that router location. We in the U.S. have pretty strict privacy laws that dictate any information like that is only going to be obtained through legal channels. Contacting the ISP is the only way you are going to get detailed information and they will not provide it without serious legal reasons typically backed up by a subpoena. TCP/IP addresses are designed to provide uniqueness however there is more to it than just the TCP/IP address. The TCP/IP address of your physical computer and the one that gets assigned to it when it contacts the server of your ISP are not the same and the ISP TCP/IP address can and will change over time as these addresses are re-used.

In addition, ISP's "lease" the IP address to you on a time limited basis that can vary from just a couple of hours to days. So just because an IP address may appear the same for more than one member of this forum, for example, there really is no way to tell if they are one and the same.

You are correct, but the IP address is assigned to your modem, and can be changed by rebooting it. So my comment is still correct. However, you are correct thatt you cannot trace an IP addy directly to a home address. I was kidding about peter stealing his bandwidth.

Yes, the modem at your house is assigned an IP address by the ISP, but just turning your modem off and on may not reset the IP...it depends on the lease time the ISP has assigned to the IP address...in some cases you may have to leave your modem off for 8 hours or more...or you can simply use a proxy server although they can be slow.

tl;dr

again, I never stated i was trying to "trace" the ip to his address. Also, I understand the idea of leasing IP's and know that multiple people from the same router can show from the same IP. again, Typically, if 2 memebers on a forum share an IP, it normally means they have accessed the site from the same network(probably should have used that term to begin with). The exception is if they are using a proxy or both members are local to each other it possible the ISP will recycle an ip.
