What would you do?

I went to a technical school, and completed a little bit of two classes, witch were basic mechanics and collisiion repair and body work, i have been a mechanic for the past 4 years now, and i did fairly well in both the courses, and the school that i went to is now giveing me the oppertunity to recieve advancaed training in one of the fields, auto mechanics or body work.

The thing is i cant really decide witch one to take, ive been makeing $15+ an hour for the past few years being a mechanic but its a pretty shitty job i have to say, its fun, but the people arnt always that great to work with, if something goes wrong, your always to blame, even if it is several months down the road and nothing to do w ith what you initialy fixed, they come back to the shop threatening to sue and all kinds of other bullshit.

On the other hand i dont see body work being all that fun to do, hours of wet sanding and other teduious work like that, doesnt seem to fun to me, but a lot less complications.

Im not just worried about money, as im sure the more money would be in body work, im looking at all aspects of the jobs, and just cant decide.

What would you do

being a mechanic is not a bad job as long as your working for a dealer

and not some BS muffler/tuneup shop chain where the only guy making money is the owner.

My buddy who is an average mechanic gets paid at Nissan by the job(not by the hour) and clears an easy 50K a year,he gets free training ongoing and seems to be able to hustle when he needs to and relax on other days

^For sure, working for one of the mom and pop shops is old news, like you said they make pretty much everything wile you get stuck with mcdonalds pay...

Ive been working at a local dealership around here called apple for the past 2 1/2 years and likeing it pretty much, they are pretty much paying for my advanced training in conjunction with the school i graduated from when i first got this training in body work / mechanics so nothing is comming out of my pocket thanks to both of them, i just cant decide witch road to take

My father in-law Used to work for Mercedes Benz of San Francisco and he had a salary of $30 + an hour. Clearly more the 50k a year plus benefits. He then went to Nissan dealership here in town and he was still making $25.00+ an hour.

Do the mechanic work dude, I mean you could make some extra money doing side jobs on weekend and don’t have to report taxes on it.

He used to do transmission repair, engine repair among other things and he was making $700.00+ working on weekends at his garage.

I feel there is more demand on mechanic work then body work

Sounds like a good idea, i mean i could work for a dealership for awile, save up some good cash and buy a nice location with a garage and eventualy start my own shop or something, or just use it for the weekends to rake in a few extra bucks like you said, none the less, like you said there is more need for a mechanic rather then just a guy that does body work, they might get paid more for a single job, but there is less jobs to be done, so wile they arnt makeing much more, they are still doing a lot less jobs

I know exactly what I would do considering I went to Automotive school for 2 years and graduated top of my class. Was recruited by BMW and Mercedes but its what I did after that counted...
