Hi there, for the past few months I've been running my SoundSplinter 12" RL-I subwoofers off of my Crossfire BMF1000D. I bought them used, and the second I hooked them up, I had tinsel lead slap on only one of the subs but turned the gains down and all was fine. Within a few weeks, the same sub that had tinsel lead slapping, had its rubber lining (gasket?) start to peel off. I e-mailed Mike at soundsplinter and he said he'd have to recone it. I ran the sub for another 3-4 months ahha and it finally gave out, there's a fat hole in the cone now, I'll have to take a picture of it for you guys.
Okay well now on to my question, I had the 2 rl-i's in a sealed box, 1.25 cu feet sealed with 500 watts rms each. I set the gains by ear, turned the gains all the way down, put volume to the loudest I'd listen to it daily, and then slowly turned gains up until I heard distortion, this was only like..1/8th of the way up? Maybe not even that much and bass boost on my Premier DEH-8MP was at +2. The set up was loud and accurate but it wasn't as loud as I want it to be. So now I'm faced with 2 options, either I pay $120 USD shipped for a recone or I jump on the bandwagon and buy the latest internet craze, 2 12" type r's.
The way I'm thinking now, I'd like more SPL this time around, I can port the type r's but the RL-I's aren't recommended to be run in a vented application. If you had to make this decision, what would you do? The Type R's aren't my only option, those are just what I'm wanting the most right now. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
