What to look for when buying a bike?

I'm looking at getting a crotch rocket this coming spring, so i've started looking at prices and models. I think that i want to get a early 90's bike since it'll be in my price range 1500-2000. I'm not looking to get anything fancy just enough to get around and have that sporty look. I want to get a 600 or 650 for insurance reasons. What is a decent amount of miles for what I'm looking for? Usually you look for something with under 20k on it. but an early 90's bike and with about 2 grand it may be tough.

look for scratches on fairings, engine and transmission case that might indicate a lay down. also, like others said, try and find one under 20k. id buy a cruiser with >20k but not a crotch rocket. when you go to look at the bike, pull the throttle a quarter of the way back and release it, then half way, then wide open and see if sticks at all.

for the price you looking to spend youll never find a bike bigger then a 250cc that wasnt layed down.

if i was you id save a few more dollars and get what you really want right off the bat.

Will this be your first bike? If so, I'd recommend a cruiser. Lots of people get hurt by buying an "R" bike for their first motorcycle. Not saying that you can't "handle the power", but if you've never been on one, you're probably going to under-estimate it like 90% of the people that lay them down within the first week.

It's going to be my first bike. I have no problem with buying a bike thats been layed down. I can't save up enough to get one that hasn't been by the beginning of summer. I figure that i can spend next winter fixing the bike that i get up cosmetically.

on the note of a 250 i really need one that can keep up with others.
