What to do with the spare tire well....

No pics right now....but here's my thoughts.

im about to go and do about 100+ sq feet of raammat on the roof and hatch area. right now i have a board that goes over the spare tire well so the box doesnt sink and fall into the well.

should i:

cut that board very very percisely so that it fits perfectly flush against the back panal (right below where the hatch door closes at) and deaden over it sealing off the spare tire well from the rest of the cabin

or

keep the board the way it is (air can get through partially) and just deaden the well
