my sisters car is a pile of $h!t we put a new alt in it like 5 to six months ago and its going

all she has is a alpine cd player no amps or nothing.

its a 1990 cutlass supreme with a 3.1 leter v6 all stock and the cruse controll quit about

What exactly is going wrong with the car that leads you to believe its the alt?

Unless you got a total p.o.s. alt, I don't see how the alt would be going bad when all its running is your cars electrical system....you should take it to the shop that put the alt in and see what they say.....

 
well it usually charges like 13.5 to 14.4 volts.now all the sudden

it only charges like 9.8 to 10.7 or a little higher.the charge light

comes on untile you increase the rpm's up to like 4thousand rpm's and it

did this the last time.And we had to old alt tested and it was shot.

what else could be wrong

oh and me and my dad put in the new alt and it was a new one not a

rebuilt one

 
the belt could be slipping, making the alt turn less than normal until you accelerate. if the belt IS slipping, it's probably due to a bad tensioner. easy fix, take it to a shop. probably no more than $50.

 
i think the power stearing pump leeks some so could that be it

like its geting wet and sliping? how do you know if the tensioner

ya know what, i'm really not sure, all i know is that's what was happening with my cousins car. the belt was slipping and the alternator wasn't making much power, so it stalled like every 5 mins. just take it to a shop and tell them what's wrong, they'll lead you in the right direction:)
