Ha, that brings back memories. I was a bellhop at the Mission Valley Inn, 1979, 80? Anyway, Pat Travers and the Scorpions had a concert later that next day, and the Scorpions were staying at my hotel.

Part of my "official duties" was to take care of the band, as they were assigned to me. The Scorpions were sitting around the pool, just chilling, and when I brought their drinks out, stopped me and asked if there was any chance they could procure any herbal supplements prior to their Radio/TV promotional stint later that afternoon, prior to the concert that night.

It just so happened that I was dating a girl whose brother was a pretty substantial business guy who lived most of the time in Hong Kong, and San Diego split the rest.

He'd just come home for a visit, staying at her (and his parents') home, and brought with him a whole big bag of these goopy, dripping greenish—almost so dark green they were kind of blackish—herbal supplements tied around a stick, oozing with some magical sticky remedy for what ails ya.

The nice Scorpion gentleman said that would do nicely; I arranged for him to get 4 of these herb-wrapped medicinal sticks posthaste!

I grabbed them on my lunch break and returned with a warning from the provider that these were not your run-of-the-mill street variety Thai sticks, that they were indeed the real deal, and that their use should be moderately restrained until you are familiar with their magical powers of calming (more like sedation) effects.

After providing these cautionary statements and enduring a rather embarrassing laugh at my expense, it was, after all the Scorpions and the notion that such could be construed in such a way as to suggest that this band should have such concerns. I mean, "as if", sheesh!

I returned to my hopping duties with a 2-hour timer set so that I could let the band know it was time to get ready 30 minutes before the radio/TV promo that afternoon.

I proceeded to make my rounds and came back in about an hour to see how their drinks and food were being handled by the staff and found, to my astonishment, that ALL of them were majorly phucked up!

I suggested they lay off the doobie... brothers for a while and jump into the pool, get a few laps in, and get back to reality before departing for the promo.

Even then, watching them on TV, live doing the promo, with HUGE grins on their faces and giggling like little schoolgirls, made it all worthwhile.

Free 5th-row center seats were also a nice treat, as was the backstage visit for me and my gal.

That was one heck of a day and one hell of a night!
