what is the BEST amp

Y are they so much more expensive?
Well, Milbert is jacking up the price...they aren't worth that much. I recently had a 2A3 directly-heated triode stereo rig custom built for $700, but I guess that could be considered expensive when the output power is less than 4wpc //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Tubes are more expensive because the technology is different - you need big transformers and lots of design in the power supply, for example. Also, the tubes themselves cost something to buy and replace. But most of it comes down to supply and demand. Most people aren't going to buy them, so the few companies that do are going to charge more.

Lol, if they only put out that much power, what's the point of them?

True, but there's a certain..."je ne sais quoi", to flex my limited French knowledge (for our Canadian members //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif)

You could just use MOSFETs in a "regular" topology and be done with it. But there's reasons why sometimes the easy path isn't the best one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Lol, that still makes absolutely no sense to me though.

That's because you've never listened to one...like anything in audio, it's subjective.

they're also are rated @ 2%+ THD.
Depends on the mode of operation, but my 2A3's are rated at 5% THD running in Class A1, single ended. Pentodes like the EL84's I'm running in the living room are less. And beam tetrodes like KT88's run even less in push/pull.

Another thing - you can't directly compare THD+N numbers from a solid-state amp to a tube amp because although the numbers may be the same, it won't sound the same to the human ear. 5% THD sounds drastically different coming from transistors than it does tubes...has to do with tubes producing lots of second-order harmonics which tend to be more "pleasing" to the ear than the higher-order harmonics MOSFETs throw out.

The one thing you guys don't realize is that there is something inherently wrong with digital music. CDs sound great, the accuracy is insane, but you lose a lot going from analog to digital. I don't know what you lose, but it's there and you miss it when you finally reclaim it. Ever since getting my vintage Magnavox FM radio / turntable with a vac tube reciever and amplifier, I've been scouring the internet almost every night looking for a vacuum tube headphone amplifier.

zapco does a lot with anolog/digital switching

If you're looking for a tube headphone amp, I know just the project for you...

And yeah - when you know, you know.

What project? Tell me! TELL ME!! Zim>

I have 2 stereo tube amps and one mono tube amp, all vintage. =) I'm hoping to convert one to headphones, even if it's hideously overpowering them.
